It was that time of year again when we get to let our hair down fully, before we embark on trying to speak like the locals and write like a French scholar! And what week it was, organised by the amazing Laura and Lucy (Events and Societies team), full of booze, exclusive club/bar deals, more booze and of course full of welcoming the Freshers 2017!
We kick started the week with our Freshers Launch party held in the ULIP basement itself, where LK & LB provided lots of food and plenty of drink to wash it all down with. This can be quite a scary time for the freshers because it can be the first time they’re meeting anyone else from their course or in our case, the Institute, but they all seemed to have a great time with their fresh faces ready to start Parisian life!
On Tuesday, we headed down to our local Scottish pub to again get boozy, but of course, in classic ULIP style, sing along to some karaoke. Some of our very own ULIPers started off the evening, showing us how to really do it (with actual good singing voices and the ability to play a musical instrument). I don’t remember much of the night to be honest, apart from singing Cher’s “Believe” which I think empowered us all.
After recovering from our bleeding ears, we then embarked on our Bar Crawl 2017! WHAT A NIGHT THAT WAS! A lot of us swapped clothes with each other, drunk from the dirty pint glass and even gave a lap dance to a stranger! It was an amazing night and I cannot wait to see the photos from the Polaroids!
On Thursday we had a bit more of a chilled out day and played pétanque, with a few drinks of course! This was all in preparation for our club night which was at the Duplex club just off of the Champs-Elysées. We certainly made the most of the drinks deals in the club, some more than others, if you know what I mean!
On Friday we had an absolute ball of a time! No, literally, we had our Freshers Ball 2017 in a cute venue in the very stylish St. Paul. It was a great penultimate ending to our Freshers Week, ending with more alcohol (mostly gin for me), dancing and plenty of flattering photos.
SATURDAY = REST DAY
Our Sunday consisted of a lovely pub quiz! That meant getting our brains in gear and finally buying the last few dregs of alcohol that we could get!
IM EXHAUSTED NOW THOUGH… How am I expected to go to early translation classes now?

Another year and another successful Tower to Tower Bike Ride has been completed. 9 days, 6 riders and approximately 600 miles peddled.
We all set off from the Eiffel Tower at 4am on the 1st June, buzzing full of adrenaline, apprehensive but incredibly excited for the journey ahead. The next 9 days were full of ups and downs as we trailed our way to the Dieppe port and then climbed our way up through England to the famous Blackpool Tower.
From Callum’s knee getting ‘healed’ on the side of the A49 in a bacon sarnie selling bus by ‘Mad Lisa’ to Laura getting stuck at a campsite for 4 hours with a leopard print dressing gown wearing man to all of Luke’s crazy but wonderful stories, we made some incredible memories that will last forever.
Huge shoutout to the best team in the world. Sophie, Callum, Luke, Jacc & Alice you are all champions. Louie, you made the greatest (and classiest) T2T driver and of course Laura, we couldn’t have done it without your constant bubbly & morale boosting support.
Thank you to Ella Rickard, Emma Pinder & Andrew Morgan who were all crazy enough to come and see us off at the Eiffel Tower at 4am!
I want to say a special thanks to many people who without them, this bike ride wouldn’t have happened. A huge thank you to: The Fishers, The Wades, Neil & Helen Boyle, The Gilby’s, The Starling’s, my family (Claire, Paul, Michelle & Phoebe) and Jean & Phillip Johnson.
I also would like to make a special mention to two amazing guys who have put their heart & soul into making this bike ride over the past three years. We promise to keep it going and your legacy will live on Callum & Mike!
